Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County – Our Featured Non-Profit for May

We constantly hear that children are the hope of the future. But how are these kids finding hope for their own dreams and goals? Who is there as role models, helping boys and girls—especially those in vulnerable communities or single-parent homes—grow up in a healthy and positive way?

Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County have stepped into this gap! For over 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has served children from 7 to 18 years of age in a wide variety of ways. From one-to-one mentoring to school-based programs to an ongoing calendar of events and much more, BBBS makes an enormous and positive impact on San Diego County’s youth. And all of these programs are made available to participating children for free!

After volunteer “Bigs” are carefully screened and trained, they’re then matched with registered “Littles” based on listed interests, locations, and various preferences. To guarantee safe and healthy relationships, Bigs and Littles are supervised and supported by the organization leaders at all times.

Many Littles come from neighborhoods with high crime rates and low graduation rates, and many of them are often dealing with stress of an incarcerated or deployed parent—leaving a significant void in their life.

Currently, BBBS is seeking male volunteers to connect with boys in the program, as only 3-in-10 of all volunteers are men! This means boys are often waiting at least 18 months days before connecting with an adult mentor. This is critical time that can’t be recovered once it’s lost!

So BBBS is calling out to San Diego County, saying, “Man-up, California!” It’s time to give the next generation of young men the positive influence and support they deserve.

For those interested, here are the basic volunteer requirements. You must:

  • Be at least 18  years old
  • Have a valid SSN
  • Have no criminal background
  • Be able to volunteer at least 4 hours a month for at least 1 year

Men (and Spanish-speaking women and men) are in high demand! Volunteer at www.SDBigs.org or call 858-536-4900 to begin developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on San Diego’s youth.

If volunteering isn’t a reality for you right now, donations are another great way to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters effort! Sponsor a life-changing Big/Little match by donating at www.SDBigs.org today.
